10. Schubert- Ave Maria

Schubert reaches the sublime with daring simplicity! The vocal lines and orchestration are certainly not complex yet they gracefully  contour round a whole range of emotions with almost unbearable poignancy. The soprano coming in half way through the piece perfectly punctuates the work, repeating a heart stopping melody that will take you into another dimension.

9. Humperdink- Evening Prayer (from Hansel and Gretel)

A mezzo and a soprano continually weave over each other to produce some astonishing music! The vocal lines are highly polished sweeps of sheer beauty, the fluttering timbre and tenderness give warmth and stillness to a dark cold night. The singing is so unhurried and beautiful it could literally take your breath away. Pure gold.

8. Schubert- Piano Sonata in D major,  ( i Allegro Vivace )

The enigma of Schubert's heart rending tunes are showcased in this piece. A nine minute journey of sublime and sensitive beauty yet still having that energetic kick of a cascading waterfall! Subtle shadings of tonality give it a melancholic texture, an inner longing against a darker reality.

7. Mahler Symphony no.3- last movement.

Serene, intense, introspective, sweeping, elegiac, haunting yet above all else beautiful! It is in a sense a latent beauty that first of all glows in the brass section but then as each phrase is thoroughly explored you begin to feel an accumulative effect that is overpowering. In a large auditorium there is seldom a dry eye at the close of the performance.

6. Wagner- Prelude to Lohengrin

Coruscating strings pour out music like water surging over a cataract of gold! This piece will ravish your senses and inspire you. Exquisitely layered chords complimented by flutes and oboes float on by like a single extended breath. The forte gradually increases in intensity until a ceiling of trumpets bring you back down to earth in a gossamer of quivering violins!

5. Mozart- Voi che Sapete aka Cherabina's Aria.(from Marriage of Figaro.)

Disarmingly pure, this is a song about a young boy struggling to cope with a difficult unfamiliar situation. The minor to major accents give it a heartfelt and effecting touch while the overall effervescent lightness  crystallise the purity of youthful impetuosity that I'm sure we can all relate to. A touching piece.

4. Dvorak- Symphony 3, Adagio.

Some broad arching Check melodies and ample use of the most beautiful of all instruments, the Harp, give this piece an atmosphere of joyful optimism. The Cellos that are interwoven in the multi-layered melody give this movement the impression that it is wrenching within itself. Completely unhurried at eighteen minutes giving you all the time in the world to immerse yourself in this gorgeous music.

3. Wagner- Eiasam wachend in der Nacht ( from Tristan and Isolde)

This piece is as pure as falling snow, the text suits the tune as darkness suits the night. Think of your most beautiful dream ever and this has got to be it. The melody breathes emotion through every single note, while every bar heralds forth the signposts of the deepest emotions known to humankind. A testimony to the sheer beauty of music.

2. Vaughan Williams- Hugh the Drover (Act 2 nos.10, 11)

Ironically Vaughan Williams saved his most gorgeous tunes for his most neglected opera, Hugh the Drover. With the warmth of Puccini and the sweep of Beethoven
RVW transforms lush English folk tunes into operatic anthems rich in pathos and undercurrents of unrestrained bravado that will make you want to leap up and sing you're heart out!

1. Tippet- Deep River ( last of five negro spirituals from 'A child of our time')

Not just one of the most moving pieces in the choral repertoire but one of the essential pinnacles in the history of music! Tippet's inclusion of Negro spirituals in this work was a masterstroke, they are stirringly appealing and talk directly to the heart. Poignantly uniting desolation and hope, building bar by bar to a heart shattering end!
